It's a done deal: an AMG GT four-door fastback super sports car is going to top the AMG line, according to the big Mercedes-Benz reveal at the March-2017 Geneva International Motor Show. But did we at Mercedes-Benz of Calabasas hear it correctly – a HYBRID supercar?

Double-takes confirm. The new AMG GT's EQ Power+ performance hybrid design will house both a handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo engine to own the road at up to 805 horsepower as well as a lightweight, long-range electric motor with three selectable modes for the versatility of pure-electric, engine-only, or hybrid operation. And it's promising to be a model for some of the longest of hauls. Brake recuperation tech's going to enable to battery charge recovery during driving, so GT can go more than just the extra mile, with the fallback of relying on the vehicle's V8 should the electric dynamo drop below a certain charge-carry threshold.

A Panamericana grille, slim headlamps, side air gills, moving center radiator shutters and a deeply drawn hood design, flanked by a raked windscreen, that extends to the wheel arches promise that the new GT will strike quite the pose while cutting through elemental resistance. But at acceleration from 0-60 mph in up to three seconds? Believe it. But the design promises utility for the everyday, to boot: a sizable tailgate, roomy luggage compartment, and interior comfort requisite to sport driving will be sure to appeal to a wider segment beyond the sports car crew.
