Founded by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the AMG® brand dates all the way back to the late 1960s. The first engine developed by the two men resulted in ten separate wins at the German Touring Car Championship, after which the roots of the AMG® brand began to take shape.
Initially founded with the goal of developing road vehicles with racing heritage and directly inspired by race vehicles, the AMG® brand began in 1967. In the early 1970s, the first AMG® specific vehicle hit the market. The AMG® Mercedes 300 SEL developed a reputation right away as a luxury sedan with serious power, and the AMG® brand took off.
During the 1970s, the AMG® brand grew steadily, with operations moving to a larger shared space in Affalterbach, Germany in 1976. During the 1980s, AMG® developed as an engine manufacturer, hitting a significant milestone in 1986 when the E-Class Coupe became available with an AMG®-enhanced 5.0-liter V8 engine, eventually becoming nicknamed "The Hammer" by the public and automotive enthusiasts worldwide.
In 1990, AMG® opened a new plant and expanded the company further. By 1993, Mercedes-Benz and AMG® boosted joint efforts to deliver performance-oriented vehicles through Mercedes-Benz outlets across the world. The first vehicle to hit the market after this shift was the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG®.
To this day, AMG® operations are still based at the plant in Affalterbach. The brand's deep roots and early heritage make it a performance brand with unrivaled pedigree, and we continue to deliver the highest level of premium luxury with AMG®-enhanced performance across our network.
